How to Start a Project

Have a great idea for a socially responsible project and excited to get started? So are we! Here’s what to do:

1. Join Our Community

The first step is to join! Most people will sign up as a personal account, but if you are associated with an existing organization you can choose Organization while signing up. An Organization account allows multiple members to veiw, acccess, and edit that account. Once you've selected Personal or Organization you can log in with your Facebook, Google, LinkedIn accounts or sig up with an email account.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

2. Create a New Project

Before you get started, now is a good time to make sure you have a well-defined outcome for your project. Fundraisers on Projects for Good must be project-based, which means they have a clearly defined outcome (Read More Here). This allows your supporters to see upfront what the intended outcome is and understand how their contribution will help. Not only does this lead to more successful fundraising, but also increases the chances that funded projects get fully executed.

With your Project outcome clearly defined, you’re ready to create your Project. Navigate to your dashboard, and scroll down to the project section. Hit the "Start a Project" button and you can start filling out new project details. In this section you can also access and complete any projects you might have started but not submitted.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

3. Project Overview

Add a title for your project, a short description, and a primary image or video. We highly recommend using a video if you already have one, or have the ability to create one. Videos are a great way to engage potential supporters and visually convey your goals!

On this step, you’ll also enter the location and category of your project, as well as whether it is seeking fundraising, in development, or already operational. Choose Yes if you need funds. Once you are finished, select ‘Save and Continue’. (You can always come back to this page to make changes before submitting your project for review.)

 

4. Funding Details

This is where you set the funding goal and choose if your project should be a defined goal fundraiser or flexible goal fundraiser. You can read more about how to choose your fundraising model here. When setting a funding goal, it’s a good idea to spend some time working out the details of your project to determine exactly how much money you’ll need to make it happen. Make sure you consider expenses like materials, labor, transportation, and fees. The more specific you can be, the better. That way you’ll be sure to not underestimate your funding needs. People like to see where their donations are going, so this will be attractive to potentail donors.

We anticipate that projects looking to raise around $5,000 will have the most success on the platform. This does not mean we don't think projects with higher funding needs will not succeed, this is just what we believe will give you the best chance. So if you find that your funding needs are much higher, don't be afraid to break the project up into multiple smaller stages in order to make your greater mission a reality! 

You can adjust your funding details at any time before you submit your Project for review. However, once once submitted, your funding details cannot be changed.

 

5. FAQ

Here you can write answers to frequently asked questions about your project. You are not required to add FAQs, but they often help people get a better understanding of your Project.

 

6. Jobs

If there are parts of your project that you aren’t able to do yourself you can hire others to help you. Called Service Providers, these community members can be skilled labororers, mentors, or volunteers. You can hire people to provide knowledge, materials, technology, labor or anything else you need to realize your project’s goals. 

This is the step where you’ll list jobs that you need completed. Here you’ll describe the details of the job, the location, the delivery date, how much you are willing to pay, and any other requirements. You can add a specific ‘Service’ category to help attract and match your project with people that specialize in the services you need. You’ll also need to set a bid submission deadline. The deadline depends on your project schedule, but a general rule of thumb is to set a deadline sometime soon after your funding period ends. That way you won’t waste any time between fundraising and implementation.

You can post one or many jobs depending on your project needs.

After your project has been reviewed and posted on the platform, people can bid on each job from interested individuals or businesses. Or you can search the directory to directly find a good match and reach out to them via the messaging system.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

7. Story

The story where you’ll write a more detailed description of your project. You can edit the style of your text and add images and videos to help tell the unique story of your Project. This is your chance to win over potential donors and with so many good causes out there, it’s critical that you tell a clear, compelling and engaging story. Here are some helpful tips on how to write a great story: 

 

  • Be as specific as possible about what you are raising money for, how it will be used, and what the impact will be. 
  • Add as many compelling pictures and or videos as you can to help tell the story! 
  • Make use of headers! Example of good headers are Why This Is Important, Our Solution, and Use Of Funds.

 

8. Preview Project

Preview what your project will look like once it is posted live on the platform. This is your chance to make sure you didn’t miss any details that are vital to your message. To edit any information, select ‘Back’. Once you are ready to submit your project for review, select ‘Submit Project’.

 

9. Project Review Process

Once you submit yourpProject for approval, the Projects for Good team will review your project submission. While your Project is awaiting approval by the Projects for Good team, it may not be edited, or deleted.

If everything looks good, we’ll post your project to the platform and send an email your way. Sometimes, we will have suggestions on how to improve your project page. If this is the case, we’ll send you an email and notify you on the Projects for Good platform.

 

 

10. Fundraise!

Once your Project is posted to the platform, you can begin fundraising. We promote projects through our social media, but the most successful projects are the ones that are shared within the project owners personal network!
